Org. Setting and Reporting
The United Nations Global Service Centre (UNGSC) provides critical Supply Chain,
Geospatial, Information and Telecommunications Technologies services and Training
to all Secretariat Entities, Peacekeeping and Special Political Missions,
Agencies, Funds and Programmes of the UN system worldwide. These positione are
located in the United Nations Global Service Centre, Brindisi, Italy within the
Central Maintenance & Repair Team, Delivery & Return Section, Supply Chain
Service. These positions report directly to the Chief, Central Maintenance &
Repair.
The United Nations Global Support Center (UNGSC) is seeking to hire four (4)
Heavy-Duty Vehicle Technicians for the refurbishment of equipment and vehicles
returned from peacekeeping operations.
Responsibilities
Within delegated authority, the Vehicle Technician will be responsible for the following duties:
Ensures that all relevant safety procedures have been followed when repairing and
fitting replacement components and parts.
Conducts pre-delivery vehicle inspections, maintenance and repair activitieson
UN-owned vehicles such as heavy equipment, including heavy-duty truck and
semi-tractors, material handling equipment, excavators, skidders, hydraulics,
bulldozers, graders, cranes, and backhoes to manufacturers' specifications and
standards.
Produces reports to document all servicing and repairs.
Assists in identifying, diagnosing and rectifying mechanical and electronic
systems found on heavy equipment, including air brake and pneumatic systems,
transmissions, and computer controls.
Assists with the identification of required parts and cleaning and maintaining
tools and equipment.
Carries out minor/major refurbishment tasks on vehicles and equipment under the 3R
Program.
Conduct rigorous testing to verify that the repaired asset meets required
performance standards and operates correctly.
Is capable of safely modifying vehicles to meet specific requirements, overhauling
major assemblies, fabricating components and spare parts, and extemporizing
repairs.
Assist with training and coaching of mechanics in mechanical repair techniques
Carries out minor/major refurbishment tasks on vehicles and equipment under the 3R
Program.
Carries out any other duties assigned by the supervisor or by the Head of
Unit/Section.

Education
High school diploma or equivalent is required.
Job - Specific Qualification
Valid driving license type B is required. Valid driving license type C is
desirable. A technical or vocational certificate in heavy-duty mechanics or other
related fields is desirable.
Work Experience
At least five (05) years of progressively responsible experience maintaining and
repairing various heavy-duty motor vehicles and related equipment is required. The
minimum years of relevant experience is reduced to three (03) years for candidates
who possess a first-level university degree or higher. Experience in the
application of the guidelines and procedures relative to the safe operation of
workshop equipment such as vehicle lifts, engine hoists and various other
electrical, pneumatic and hydraulic equipment is required.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
For this position, fluency in English (both oral and written) is required.
Assessment
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be
followed by competency-based interview.
Special Notice
This position is subject to local recruitment pursuant to staff rule 4.4 of the
United Nations Staff Rules. Applicants for positions in the General Service and
related categories must be authorized to work for the United Nations in the duty
station where the position is located.
Eligible applicants selected from outside the duty station are responsible for any
expenses in connection with their relocation to the duty station. Staff members
subject to local recruitment are not eligible for allowances or benefits

This position is temporarily available for a period of 364 days, with the
possibility of extension.
This post is financed by extra budgetary and renewal is subject to the
availability of the post and funds.
If the selected candidate is a staff member from the United Nations Secretariat,
the selection will be administered as a temporary assignment.
While this temporary assignment may provide the successful applicant with an
opportunity to gain new work experience, the selection for this position is for a
limited period and has no bearing on the future incumbency of the post.
Staff members of the United Nations common system organizations who will reach the
mandatory age of separation or retirement within the duration of the current
temporary need period are not eligible to apply.
